Mahamudra Daily Practice Audio

In October 2003, at the Uttara Tantra teaching in Tucson, Geshe Michael asked everyone to listen to the Mahamudra Daily Practice Module. Since the entire audience agreed with his request (with a resounding "Mazal!"), we are happy to provide the Mahamudra course in MP3 format.

Excerpt:

"And so we often talk, you and us together, we have often spoken about trying never to plant a seed like that in your mind. We talked about how to destroy those seeds in your mind that you put there when you didn't know that those who live by the sword will perish by it. We spoke a lot about how to clean those seeds from your mind. If you do it well you will go to what they called heaven, what we call paradise, it's the same place.

But there's another kind of mental seed maintenance that's very important. And that's what to do with your good mental seeds. We do lots of good karma. How to takecare of those beautiful seeds in our minds? I think we often tend to concentrate on the bad seeds, and that's okay - we have to get rid of them and not create new ones by doing violence to people who are bad to us.

And so when I was thinking about what to teach - there are lots of small birds here they are very lovely, they are good friends, now they come to us a lot - and one of them said, "You have to teach Master Shantideva."

I said, "Why?"

He said, "There's a director of a retreat center in Arizona and he wants to hear the last chapter," [sounds of giggling and laughter in the audience] "the one you didn't have time to teach in New York."

So I said, "I can't refuse. He's taking care of all of us."

And I thought it would be good now to speak about the last chapter of the great Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life written by Master Shantideva, because we have to know what to do with our good mental seeds. We have to avoid violence to others. We have to try to burn the old bad seeds in our minds, but I think from time to time we have to celebrate and we have to think about the good seeds we have. And there are special methods for making them bigger and bigger. Because we do a lot more bad karma than good karma, so we have to try to make our good seeds bigger. And it's a happy work, it's a joyful thing to do."

Second Sight

The full transcript of Geshe Michael Roach's teaching in September, 2001 at Diamond Mountain, "Second Sight" (369 KB), is available for download in Adobe Acrobat format. (If you need the free Acrobat Reader plug in to view the document, it is available here.)

Excerpt:

"I'd like to tell you about a special practice. Then I'd like you, if you'd like, if you want to, then try to practice it in the next few weeks or months. This special practice is called chu lam kyi neljor (spyod lam kyi rnal 'byor). Chu lam means something you do from hour to hour during the day. It means it's not a practice that you do only during your meditation or prayer time. It's a practice you do all day long. Neljor means yoga. In this case, yoga means a special spiritual practice..."

The Magic of Empty Teachers

Excerpt:

"I would like to speak about teachers.

Sometimes you get a feeling like you would like to learn something new. You might see an extraordinary person, maybe a musician who plays extraordinary music, and then your heart leaps inside and you say "I want to learn to do that. I want to learn to do it as well as they do."

Then maybe you try. You go and buy a flute from the store and, after you sit for a few hours, it becomes clear that you cannot even make it peep.

And then, especially if you are very serious to become a master, you set out to find a true teacher. Anyone who tries to learn something great realizes at some point they must find a master teacher..."
